how to make a painting
My time, and my energy are my most precious commodities. Both are absorbed swiftly by the necessities of each day, which can feel mundane, repetitive, overwhelming and unrewarding. As I get older, the clock seems to tick faster, and I feel an increasing urgency to find my way to where I hope to land as an artist, and as a human. When life stands in the way of this trajectory, it can be difficult to remain grounded. These paintings tell the story of managing the frustration and insecurities of womanhood by maintaining a humorous spirit. I only recently returned to painting, and found myself making silly lists of the steps I needed to take in order to complete a piece, none of which had anything to do with painting at all. These became the titles of each work, and represent all the things that keep me from doing it-while trying to hold onto the joy for knowing it’s vastly outside my control. Wherever you are going, don’t lose sight of your destination, and keep travelling light. With love… Kiya.
